Early Estimate
of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities for the First 9 Months (January–September) of 2021
Summary A statistical projection of traffic fatalities for the
first 9 months of 2021 shows that an estimated 31,720 people died in motor vehicle traffic
crashes nationwide. This represents an increase of about 12.0 percent as compared to 28,325
fatalities that were projected in the first 9 months of 2020, as shown in Table 1. This also
represents the highest number of fatalities during the first 9 months of the year since 2006
and the highest percentage increase during the first 9 months in the recorded history of
data in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
