This just completely rocks. Via Bradlands, the Chicago Tunnel Company Railroad. A few years back you might remember the flood that shut down the Loop for a while. This is the tunnel system that contributed to that, dating from the days when the narrow gauge electric railway was used to deliver coal and remove cinders and ash from boilers all over the city..

That is one fascinating story. It really brings home how vital our downtown areas once were to inspire such an endeavor.

Chicago"s Downtown is still vital, just not vital in the same way. Trucks deliver goods more efficiently, and we heat with natural gas and electricity instead of coal. It does show a clever way to deal with the traffic problem of the 1890's--- horseshit.
