iTerm2, VLC, it's really kind of horrifying how Apple leaves essential system utilities to third parties.

Apple was always an appliance company first, software company last.

What does iTerm2 provide (outside of conveniences) that the built-in Terminal doesn't? (I don't use iTerm2, but worked with the developer in the past. He's great people)

I'm trying to use Terminal, but the biggie for me is that it gets kicked into that mode where it pastes garbage at the front and end of the payload. iTerm2 has a setting to deliberately turn that off.
I think that's really the only feature I miss in Terminal from iTerm2. There's some cool features in it, but I don't use 'em. And, really, if I can just type "reset" when I see that happening, it's usually enough th clear it up.

I dropped VLC for NX (Windows). VLC would only allow 8 char passwords and only encrypt the password handshake.

I think you're confusing VLC with VNC? VLC is the media player that doesn't suck (iTunes, now Music, is the one that... wow does it suck. In particular, when I use it to test an MP3 when I'm hacking on my own music player, it writes back into the folder, causing my MP3 player to do a reload. Which is its own issue, but I only asked it to play the damned file. Also, often I have to ask it to play the damned file twice.)
