American city.
Over the course of the 20th century, our city leaders decided they didn’t want
cities any more. From 1890 to 1960, the population of New York City increased from 1.5
million to just under 8 million. After the downzoning, growth stopped. New York City has
roughly the same population today that it did in 1960.
