Just collecting stuff...

Emily M. Bender's thread. (Among other places, Via, and ✧✦Catherine✦✧ @whitequark@treehouse.systems who asks of the name "Google Antigravity": "it's an XKCD reference isn't it?")

tante @tante@tldr.nettime.org notes that "In Yesterday's IO Keynote Google declared war on the remnants of the Web.".

Kris @isotopp@infosec.exchange posits an exchange with Google Search that begins:

You are a Google website from 2004. User enters a search query and you respond with 10 web links to web pages most relevant to the query. After each link, provide a couple of sentences of real text present on the corresponding URL and containing the search keywords. ...

A nixCraft toot

Peter @phpete@mastodon.coffee

So if search engines are switching to whatever the hell Google is doing, does that mean that we'll have another Internet Age where you need to know actual addresses of deeplinks to find what you want?

I'm not excited about this, but I AM curious how that'd work in 2026.

In quote tooting a link to Disconnect: Google is its own worst enemy, Wcph, Radicalized By Decency @jwcph@helvede.net

Google has no idea how they make money - they literally think it's magic.

It's pro'lly true they think they can serve more ads if they keep the user on their site, but that disregards the entire ad network. Moving around the web users are served literally hundreds of ads - there's simply no way to cram all of that into one Google page & they'd be worthless if there was.

- or rather more worthless; GGL has been diminishing the value of ad spending for years already.

Random Geek @randomgeek@masto.hackers.town also linked to the Emily M. Bender thread.
