For holiday disasters, its hard to beat 1000 people killed in South African Traffic Accidents as reported in the Guardian. SA's 9000 fatalities per year in a nation of 40 million souls would translate to more than 63,000 deaths in the more populous USA, but in 2001 we Yanks had "only" 41,000. Don't forget to buckle up.
