Remember that DeBeers ad that claimed "Whack! Pow! Whoosh! Kablam! In a tender, loving sort of way." Yeah, Al Qaeda is alleged to be big in the diamond biz.
It's odd that diamonds are alleged to hold their value, but at the retail level there's no resale-ability.

Synthetic diamond manufacture is underway. Initially, these synthetics were yellow, but now they can be made water white. Sizes up to 100 carats are currently available at more than competitive prices. While this information is certainly not secret, it is not widely publicized.
Diamond prices have been artificially mantained for a long time, but there is a limit. Right now the industry is trying to sell anniversary diamonds as well as yesterday, today and tomorrow (three stone) rings, etc. Eventually prices will drop and extant stones will become essentially worthless, except for their romantic value. Of course, that is the only value that most stones have now as well.
Of more interest is the advances in technology that abundance of diamonds will bring.
