Plan B

FDA Approves Over-the-Counter Access for Plan B for Women 18 and Older (SFGate Article). So those 18 and over can get the "morning after" pill from a pharmacist, but without a prescription, those under 18 need a prescription from a doctor. A step in the right direction, the restriction on those 17 and younger is all about politics and a sop to the fringe radicals of the anti-abortion lobby.

If a young girl (under 18) needs such a thing, talking to a Dr. about it sounds like a good idea. At least they don't require the parents. But I could sure seeing it be an either/or thing: Either parental consent, or a doctor. But then, almost nothing to stop 'Mom' or a over-18 friend from getting a pill for them. As a law, it's a placebo to require the Dr's prescription.

Wow... Given the current religious climate in the White House, I'm surprised the FDA actually did this now and not just wait until after the 2008 election.

I believe that the pressure and the supporting evidence were so overwhelming that even in the current political climate they couldn't push it off for two more years.

I also suspect that the religious right's hold on national politics may be more tenuous than more people think, given that Dubya has been a symbol of that, and his star is waning.

The religious rights power has always been dependent on a perception that they were powerful rather than the actual power they have had.
