We're canning a peck of green tomatoes tonight. Joy of Cooking[Wiki] 2nd ed, p805: "Be sure to screw lids with a slow steady turn, so as not to displace the rubbers."

Oh, and a cup is a measure of volume. A peck is... well... a damned lot of green tomatoes. And 18 peppers is also a lot of peppers.

And for best results, always use new rubbers. They seal better.

"Screw slow and steady so as not to displace the rubbers" is not the most horrible advice I've heard.
