The Freedom of Speech

Writers are often spoken of as "having a voice." What happens when you lose it, literally? Chistopher Hitchens is dying of cancer, and in Vanity Fair he tells with his customary eloquence what it is like to begin to lose the power of speech. Some people continue on; film critic Roger Ebert has lost his voice but has turned into a blog star. Others, like Hitch, must view it in the narrowing focus of short time. Highly recommended.
