two things happened today that seem to be related.

  1. on 7th and Broad downtown chattanooga, the newspaper boxes have papers from thursday last week on them.
  2. i got cold called to subscribe at work. my comment was: "the online version sucketh. why subscribe?" her response was a sigh and an "i understand".

the Chattanooga Times ("news") Free Press is dead and it isn't even news.

Once again I'm remembering that meeting back in... must have been '94, when we met with some VP level guy from the Times (this was before they merged, I think) and told him "here's what's coming" and that he should set up a web site of some sort and try to get up on the new technology, and he asked us what the business proposition was.

We didn't know, but we knew what was coming. They were unwilling to experiment with the new technology, and are getting stomped.

I can't tell if the news is in decline, or if I'm just more aware now, but it seems like there's a tremendous race for the bottom. Charlene and I watched Absence of Malice[Wiki] on Saturday night, good commentary on the press, but then, 1981, the angst was apparently about facts and truth. Now it's about entertainment vs anything else.
