First I start off with the question: Who/what is Satan and why is it so powerful? Assuming you believe in God (big G) as a powerful entity that created the world, etc.. etc.. Satan is a small player at least. Christian (and other religions) mythologies have empowered Satan.
Why?
Because the "Bogeyman" story is:
"....is an amorphous imaginary being used by adults to frighten children into compliant behaviour."
