When you want to build something, in a shop, on your own time and a little extra money, it's fun. When you HAVE to.. not so much.

Yep. I went out late yesterday evening and bought a Milwaukee Sawzall, something I should have when we bought he house. Maybe I can catch up today, I'm having my coffee now...

I realized the true agony of home ownership one evening in Chattanooga. I was on the roof of the old house on Woodland trying to cut out a rotted chunk of roof underlayment so I could re-shingle a leaky patch. It was in the seam between two sections of roof and had 6-7 layers of old shingle.

It would have been a pleasant afternoon project if it weren't for the lightning.

Of course, the first time I really experienced this pain was my first winter in the old house. I woke up at 3am to the sound of running water. Went under the house and the workshop was flooded in about two feet of water. A pipe up in the narrowest section of the crawl space burst in the sub-zero temps. Of course, I spent most of that night in the now wet and muddy crawl space in the sub-zero temps trying to get my PVC glue to set. That's when I started keeping a box of miscellaneous compression fittings around for quick and dirty plumbing fixes.

My solution now: buy a newer house. Nothing in my current house is more than 15 years old. Repairs come down to things like rehanging vinyl siding after a windstorm or digging up the sprinkler system for a garden bed that we can run a tiller in.

Dad, we're up and running on PEX. There's a bunch of detail work to be done (I've got a bunch of valves to install on stub ends), the feed to the back hose faucet and irrigation line isn't done yet, but we're running.

I'm going to pull a permit and not tell 'em I've already done it, which means I'll leave the walls open for a bit, but I think I (with a big hit of help from Alan last night) have it under control.

Eric, I am now a believer in newer houses. Argh.
