From Shadow: a build log of a wood LED clock that puts the LED segments behind a veneer face. Kinda cool. We currently use a projecting clock in our bedroom, mostly because that was the one lit clock we could find that sets itself using the USNO or whatever broadcast, but this might be a nice way to fit into the decor we hope to build in there.

It's almost certainly WWVB, which is run by NIST.

Aha! For some reason I thought of the USNO when I think time, but that makes sense.

Used to be the Naval Observatory that did that, but NIST got the time-keeping in Fort Collins, which includes the master, authenticated NTP servers (the ones that tell all the other NIST-run NTP servers what time it is).
USNO does the time-keeping for GPS, though.
I looked into this a little when I bought a Citizen Radio-Controlled watch, which keys off of WWVB in the US. Their SatelliteWave watch uses GPS. And then I poked around a little more this morning, because the first list of NTP servers I found didn't mention Fort Collins, because that one's not available without an account.

Yeah, I don't mind a little bit of red light, but I just put black electrical tape over the green LEDs of the wired some detector/fire alarm system. Why does everything in the world thinks it needs an "I'm here!" light.
Also: Sooo glad that the Ubiquiti UniFi access points have the option to turn off their status lights.
