"If you are showing reality as it exists, people as they exist-that's political as fuck." Everything about this N K Jemisin and Neal Gaiman conversation is good. https://lithub.com/on-writing-...cs-and-queer-characters-we-need/

If your story line is about the trials queer characters have to go through, or expressing the equality of queer characters, that's fine. If you're shoehorning these into a different story, to the detriment of the original plot, like the comics have been doing lately, you're going to have a bad time.

I think that's part of the "reality as it exists". If you're writing non-mainstream
characters by simply dropping them into mainstream characters and changing some physical
traits, that's gonna show.
On the other hand, and I haven't been following comics, but comics have always been a
platform for political change and social commentary (from Superman in many incarnations, to
Dark Night showing vigilantism extended).
We will not edit your comments. However, we may delete your
comments, or cause them to be hidden behind another link, if we feel
they detract from the conversation. Commercial plugs are fine,
if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't
try to pretend to be a consumer. Annoying endorsements will be deleted
if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and
more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave
such ridicule in place.
