If your story line is about the trials queer characters have to go through, or expressing the equality of queer characters, that's fine. If you're shoehorning these into a different story, to the detriment of the original plot, like the comics have been doing lately, you're going to have a bad time.

I think that's part of the "reality as it exists". If you're writing non-mainstream characters by simply dropping them into mainstream characters and changing some physical traits, that's gonna show.

On the other hand, and I haven't been following comics, but comics have always been a platform for political change and social commentary (from Superman in many incarnations, to Dark Night showing vigilantism extended).
