Genealogy discussion this weekend had my wondering about all the people with the last name "Lyke" of African ancestry. I figured former Dutch colonies, someone pointed out the obvious, that often slaves ended up with the last names of their masters. Haven't found that branch yet

Stories I was told as a child was the family name was involved in the trade, name and specifically last name given by the first seller, ship captain, company.. what/whoever was responsible. So there are a lot of African ancestry people with my last name because of a person/entity with my last name was responsible for a lot of the slave trade. One story I heard was the "Harrison House was a slave trading house in New Orleans" -- disclaimer: I have no idea of reality. Lots of strange conflicting stories in the ancient family lore.
