I don't quite understand how Punch-Drunk Love got billed as a comedy. There were a few deadpan laughs in it, but the sudden explosions of violence were downright scary. I particularly was struck by the scene where Sandler calls his sister from a payphone in Hawaii, and in the space of a few seconds moves from a casual conversation to threatening her life. The desperation and barely repressed volcanic anger in the scene was harrowing. I think I was the only person in the theater that really liked it.
For a chick flick, try Real Women Have Curves. It's a nice, positive movie, although the mother-daughter conflict could have been done as easily in a Jewish, Greek, Italian or East Indian setting. It also betrays its roots as a play through a bit too much talking in the pivotal scenes.
