Okay, putting this here so that I remember it next time I go by the bookstore: Grande Horizontales looks at the lives of 4 19th century courtesans.

I'd heard of one of the four demi-mondes in that book. Cora Pearl was actually Emma Crouch, originally from England. To advertise her wares at the start of her career, she played the small part of Cupid in an operetta by Offenbauch. Her costume... ivory opera gloves and a few well placed diamonds. A very interesting woman. Thanks for the book tip.
