Over at Backup Brain Dori was bragging on Healdsburg and mentioned an article about the pastry chef at Cyrus Restaurant that has a couple of neat recipes.
Most folks I know right now are skipping dessert, but I desperately want to make the Coconut Panna Cotta with Meyer Lemon Jam, even though each serving looks like it pretty much uses up the fat quota for the day.

OH NO, the panna cotta has coconut milk in it! :( If you make it, tease me with how good it is: panna cotta is the dessert of the gods.

We never did figure out what it was about coconut milk that got you, right? Whether young coconut or coconut flesh was acceptable?

I got a little busy writing a NaNo-novel in November and have just finally surfaced, so I haven't made any tests yet. But I'd be fairly sure that canned coconut milk won't pass muster in any event.

Interesting: a Google search on "coconut milk allergy" currently brings up one valid result, the rest are spammers. Alas, the valid result doesn't give me any more information.
The two things I am coming up with as substitutes for coconut flavor in the manna cotta that would go well with that lemon are papaya (with a more traditional manna cotta) or almond (probably both as an extract or amaretto, and as almond milk).

I have a friend who is - violently - allergic to coconut. Give him anything to eat that contains coconut and you'll see a perfect example of projectile vomiting - careful, you might even experience it...

I am not a biologist, so I'm not totally sure I'm making sense of these things, but here's some clinical information on coconut allergy and a case of coconut allergy in a 3 year old that suggests that an allergy to coconut meat/fruit can be specific and unconnected to allergies to coconut pollen or other nuts or legumes.
Legit references also seem to be popping up about cross-allergies with walnuts and latex, and anaphylactic reactions.
So... uh... don't go experimenting too far, Diane, unless you're fairly sure those reactions aren't life-threatening.
