Stolen from crasch's del.iciou.us feed: Building the FAL rifle at home.
Building an FAL is a challenging and rewarding undertaking, and
one that has few peers in the firearms world. All at once, the builder
learns about his rifle with a degree of intimacy that most firearms
owners will never know, and has the pride and satisfaction of a
job well done when it functions correctly. If that isn't worth a
"Glock and a half," we don't know what is.

That's a lot of work to assemble a very heavy, old rifle. You'd have to want one bad to do all that, I think there are better choices (as seen to the left).

A FAL isn't all that heavy, though I prefer the CETME (which is an even older design). FALs and CETMEs
(and G3s) are all lighter than my boltie. The brutal thing about humping a .308 around is the weight of the
ammunition.
It's really not all that much work to assemble one. Most of the hard work is fixing the damage when the
receiver is cut apart.
I think they're all pretty good values, but of them all, the CETME's are the cheapest if you can still find one.
The supply seems to have pretty well dried up, though. Century is supposedly out of parts since sometime
in late 2005. Southern Ohio Gun (where most were sold through) is also sold out.
And I'd be careful with any of them in CA. All are likely subject to the CA assault weapons ban.

Pretty guns, Meuon! What weapon in .308 caliber do you think would be worth assembling?
