The "stuff" is a rolled fondant icing, it's an icing that doesn't stick to the tools so it's good for those details or that buffed shiny look.
Given the issues we saw people having with cutting in to the succubus cake, I'd totally love to be the first one to bring a cleaver down on a cake like this.

Odd. S#2, who loves the gruesome cakes you've made and photographed in the past, completely blanched at the video of the baby cake and had to leave before seeing the end, he got so queasy. Me, I couldn't wait to take a knife to the thing! (And what were all those layers of "stuff" she kept layering on over the cake? Was it for shaping or for color or... what?)
