The "Smart" car seems amazingly expensive and gas hungry, especially when for $14,000 you could get a Honda Fit that carries more and gets way better mileage.

the balancing act DOES draw some energy, but with uber-efficient motors, not as much as you might think, Did you notice the casters fore and aft? Those scare me. At least on a Segway, if things go wrong (that 45 degree hill), you can jump off.
It's a concept vehicle, useful in limited places. They can give them to GM Exec's.
I'm driving a Mini, I've looked hard at "Smart" cars (they really don't get that good of milage in comparison) and that's as small as I want to go if I'm sharing the road with F150's and H2's.

Maybe it's just my lack of imagination, but it seems to me that all the balancing act involved in controlling the Segue must consume a fair amount of energy. Why not just plant a third wheel (caster), and run it by differential drive wheels?
