I've known about the W3C geolocation API for a while, and even some hacks to bring it to unlocked iPhones, but didn't know that Apple had actually implemented it in 3.0.

Ummm... What do you mean, more play? I've known about it for a while. I've also known that Firefox has an geolocation API as well.
