On the first day of BART's operation, I (then living in San Jose) had some business in Oakland, and took advantage of the free introductory ride, from Oakland to Fremont and back. The contrast between the energy sapping traffic warfare of the drive up and the relaxed social event of the BART ride was overwhelming; I've been a fan of shared vehicle transit ever since.

Actually, having lived in Europe for a while, I already recognized the superiority of shared transit, but that experience cemented it for me. Go BART
