US News and World Report has a fluff piece on "RelayRides", a "rent your car" facilitator.
Let's see: The article says average price of $8/hr, RelayRides takes 40%, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics says the average cost of owning and operating an automobile is about $.59/mile. So: I'd only make money if they drive < 8 miles in that hour. Hmmm...
Sounds like a great deal for the renter...

Yeah, I guess that does start to make more sense. I wonder how they are with old cars, and if they'll work out the liability chain issues.

Dan, if I'm reading that table correctly 2/3 of that is "fixed costs" -- which you're paying anyway if you own the vehicle. The breakeven is now 24 miles.
Fuel cost is the biggest part of the rest. Average fuel efficiency for the US auto fleet is about 20 MPG. If you own, for example, a ten year old Toyota Corrola, you get 50% better milage than that. Breakeven, about 32 miles.
Which makes more sense, economically.
