Dear BMI/ASCAP: I don't *need* a $108 50 performance license, I need one event, would happily pay $10. This should be online w/Credit Card.

Record your own original songs, and make them terrible. Then you won't be invited back.

Well, from email conversation with some of the smaller providers I'm getting a bunch of "I'd love it if you buy my MP3 and play it as a performance in this context, but I can't help you on figuring out the authorship of any of these songs...".
Mostly because their bread and butter is either venues or square dance callers that have paid the ASCAP/BMI fee.
If I thought I were going to be in this position more than once this year, I'd just suck it up and pay the $108, but... sigh.

You're assuming their primary job is to promote musicians. Their real purpose is to promote *commercial* musicians. Small live bands take business away from pop artists.
We will not edit your comments. However, we may delete your comments, or cause them to be hidden behind another link, if we feel they detract from the conversation. Commercial plugs are fine, if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't try to pretend to be a consumer. Annoying endorsements will be deleted if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave such ridicule in place.
