You know, it doesn't matter if this is true or not. If people start believing this the damage to our democratic institutions is done. If you can't trust your elected and appointed leaders to make good choices because you fear they are being coerced, you cannot accept anything they say or do as valid or in the best interests of the country.
Including in the areas of privacy and surveillance; from which the problem originates.
