I note that PRICE is a big variable, and I know that Seagate specifically makes a few different spec/classes of drives, with the better ones being expensive.

That being said: We've got a few small raid arrays (14 drives or so) full of some better Seagates that have been rock solid for 4 years, and the only one that has issues is one in South America that gets powered off rudely about once a month and has poor air conditioning. That 14 Seagate system loses a drive every 3 to 6 months.

What we have been considering is systematically, adding/replacing with new drives to the systems with a two year cycle. Looking at that data, that might be smart. The cost of the drives, compared to issue/downtime is irrelevant.

My server's ZFS pool is made up of two Hitachi 1.5TB HDS723015BLA642 drives and two Seagate 3.0TB ST3000DM001 drives. Based on this data, I should probably think about replacing those Seagates. I have a loose Seagate 4TB ST4000DM000 drive I was going to add in. I only have 1.47T on the pool (with 2.42T available). I could probably take the 3TB drives out without a replacement.
