One way of taking your comment is literally:
It fits the trope. ie: You have to mention or include the item for it to be used later in the story.
I'd consider alluding to the character would be the type to have a gun, such as a permit reference, ex military or NRA member reference.
The other way: Yeah, the writer should have a concealed weapon permit.
