Red Cross complaints

Some Valley Fire volunteers critical of Red Cross.

With the recent fires up in Lake County I have seen a whole bunch of grumblings like this, KTVU collects some of 'em in one article. A whole lot of local organizations saying "we need X, Y, and Z", the Red Cross representative saying "Stop giving goods, we just need cash", the local organizations saying "We need X, Y, and Z in these locations, and we need the Red Cross to STFU and go home because they're getting in the way."

And then detailed instructions on how to avoid the Red Cross gatekeepers at various shelters which had pools and outdoor areas to get towels, swimsuits and sunscreen to kids. And more people looking for loads of hay and grains for large animals, and such.

I've had the misfortune to see inside Red Cross's organization multiple times. It's a weird business. They are good at marketing the brand, getting press. Often others are doing more quickly and quietly. They'd rather be seen handing out bottled water than building small long term infrastructure like sanitation and clean water.
