I was going to guess some kind of chute from the earlier picture, but yeah, the match dispenser makes sense.

For kitchen matches. Fresh matches live in the bottom shelf, used ones in the top shelf (or vice versa). The spousal overunit has a decorated one hanging in our kitchen.
