Some options. Cloud 9 is probably the best answer for an academic setting. It should be possible to get Atom running as well, although it will mean installing Node on the Chromebook. And I doubt the school administration would be thrilled with rooting the devices.

Seems to me that it wouldn't be that hard to write a plain-text editor that will run under Chrome and get it into the appropriate google store. There's probably a bright kid who could do that instead of thinking up new ways to tweak the administration.

This is a legit set of observations about the state of client access these days. My suggestion whenever this comes up is spend 5-10 bucks a month on a VM somewhere with your Linux/BSD of choice, and give 'em all a shell...
