In particular, there are different places in the path generation to insert materials appropriate tool speeds, and being smart about climb-cutting is also a thing.

Don't sweat the paths too much. There's been 30 years of thinking gone into that for plotters, and people are still tweaking the path-generation code. As long as the right bits get cut and the right bits get left behind, you're good.
