This came from a discussion of a semi-theoretical question at the Homebrew Website Club meeting: If you were a woman in a Middle Eastern country looking to connect with like-minded people and effect social change, what tools would you use?
This scenario captures all sorts of issues of control and privacy and cost, and from there I started wondering what the web is still good for.
Google has shaped the web in ways that... I think leave some big opportunities, but I'm not sure if those are going to involve HTTP as anything other than an application platform: The actual publishing may happen on something else. And I'm still reworking my thoughts on this, but I realized that I'm not consuming from all of those sources the way some of y'all are.

I'm not sure this is entirely true, is it? It seems like I find things on the web at large by way of IRC, Twitter, hacker news, reddit, MetaFilter, GitHub, a bunch of feeds...
Granted that if I need to seek something out, I'm probably googling.
