Nancy Pelosi: Democratic candidates should not be forced to toe party line on abortion.
Because the Democrats weren't doing a good enough job of self-destructing thus far.

Yeah, to me abortion is a pretty hard litmus test about personal autonomy. If a politician is willing to take a stand for personal autonomy in that way, then I'll listen to the rest of their pitch. If they aren't, I won't.
However, this is also why I give to issues advocacy organizations, and not so much to politicians... Because I believe politicians will pick and choose among the issues that they think will get them elected, and it's much better to sway public opinion than to get behind a politician.

There are a ton of moderates out there that would have voted for Clinton had they not been so morally opposed to abortion. In the same vein the Democrats would lose a ton of voters if the Republicans weren't so hardlined on opposing abortion.
