Yeah, but given the subsidies necessary to create more lanes (and support the rest of that automobile territory), this is way way into the "we're losing money on every sale but we'll make it up on volume" territory.

More highways also means more freedom. The ability to take a job that's further away from your home. The ability to get a home in a less expensive area further from your job. Limiting transportation in order to reduce the number of cars on the road has its own expenses.
