We don't get enough lightning in these areas to give the surge suppressors a workout, but it also probably wouldn't be a huge deal to drop a MOV across the lighting circuit...

I don't know what the lifespan of the panel is, but I figure that by the time we have to replace it technology will have gone even further forward.

And I also haven't hooked up a dimmer to it yet, but it's dimmable (uses a 10v dimmer); we may put these in other rooms, where we'll probably want to dim them.

Just remember that, when it goes out, you have to replace the entire fixture. They're getting less expensive but are still more than a simple bulb, and replacing it may require an electrician in some areas (at least, replacing it legally). At some point the mounting and a user-serviceable connection should be standardized, which should fix that problem.

You might want to stick a surge suppressor in your breaker panel if you've got a few of these in the house to help protect them.
