There might be some structural strength added in the rack, but because it comes down to the truck bed it would've been a tortuous design; and the rack doesn't look heavy enough to take much force. I would've tied it into the roof above the door pillars, and added curves/diagonals to the rear of the rack to create a stiff support completely bypassing the portion that was cut out.

My read was that they put the replacement for the arched bars in the roof racks... But, yeah, more details would be cool.

I'm not a huge fan of their conversion design... They probably had to add some significant beams to the underside. I would've made the roof rack part of the structure instead.
