Incubators as pyramid schemes

2000-07-12 02:08:18+02 by Dan Lyke 3 comments

Based on some inside information, I made some Fucked Company picks today, but here's an article I wish I'd read before I chose this weeks failures. Especially pertinent, since I've been discussing with that friend who was interested in "sovereign citizens" the ethics of pyramid schemes, was this quote: "It's a difficult time period to take a company like Divine public," said Steven Frankel, managing director of Boston-based Adams Harkness & Hill. "It's very hard to get investors excited about a company whose end product is more IPOs." (Incidentally, there are some neat elements to the design of that site promoting the pyramid schemes[Wiki], it's worth a look, although if it starts to actually sound enticing you should balance it out.) I found this 'cause I was looking around for a little more supporting evidence on that aforementioned inside info. Anyone know of a weblog or super fast breaking news site devoted to .com rumor? CNET News is more sanitized hype than useful information, which I guess is a function of advertiser funded media.

The incubator project in Chattanooga is being organized by a grant guy. You know the kind of person who gets $500K grant to do a feasability study for some new technology and then another $3M to do a market research and implementation study - only to find out that the technology won't work. Sometimes the pyramids are very small...
