Rise of Skywalker

On Friday we went to see The Rise of Skywalker. We were not impressed. I came away with three impressions.

  1. When I've taken screenwriting classes, the first thing they say is "write the subtext, then make sure you don't use any of that in your script". The dialog in this film was all on the nose subtext. It's like nobody took the time to actually write the script, they just pulled the dialog out of the first pass treatment and threw up some music video-like visuals behind it.
  2. I thought all the cracks about the JJ Abrams lens flare were jokes, but holy shit that was gratuitous.
  3. I came away with new appreciation for Harrison Ford as an actor, because he was the one actor who managed to actually sell that hokey-ass dialog. Which was still hokey.

Reinforced my feeling that there hasn't been a Star Wars movie since 1983, although now I definitely don't want to go back and see any of the Star Wars movies because I'm wondering if they were all that bad and it was just that I was young...
