Currently reading Beth L. Bailey's From Front Porch to Back Seat: Courtship in Twentieth-Century America, from 1988, and a lot of that is about the construction of femininity in post WWII America, where perms and makeup became an attempt to create an ideal "lady" out of every woman.
It's relevant.
