I once priced how much it would cost to go from Ft. Lauderdale to Seattle via train (because I refuse to fly due to the TSA). Six days (in the best case) for well over $2,000. And that was a decade ago. If we want rail to be viable, it needs to be cheaper than air.

Truth. I've had some conversations recently about how the rest of the world can build rail and other infrastructure, and the way that we fund infrastructure from the federal level, and whipsaw our policies back and forth twice a decade or so, causing huge project changes every time we do so, is a large part of it.
