Yes, Ballmer sounds like a lunatic with his "Linux is the anti-christ" spiel, but there's no reason for Microsoft to be making all of this anti-Open Source noise except as a smokescreen. Pay attention to the web services issues. Pay attention to the subscription models that they're implementing. These are the real issues that they're attempting to divert attention from!

The move to subscription model software licensing has pushed me over the barrier. I'm now running Linux at home and work. I keep WinME on my laptop but will be looking at a PS2 or GameCube for games instead of using a PC. And the money I'll save not buying new hardware all the time to keep up with the Microsoft bloat I can add to my daughter's college fund. My dual-Celeron 400 with 256MB of RAM will last five more years as a home Linux box and my dual PIII 600 will last the same timespan for a work machine. I'm sure with the 2.4 kernel, I could even get away with running Linux on my P266 laptop with 140MB RAM.
I saw a blurb about IBM's DB2 on Linux outperforming some of the recent Win2K/SQL Server 2K TPC benchmarks. I may be moving away from Sybase soon but we'll likely stick to Linux for the foreseeable future.
