The New York Times has aan interesting review of an exhibit of the work of photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado, titled Can Suffering Be Too Beautiful?.
"Beautification of tragedy results in pictures that ultimately
reinforce our passivity toward the experience they reveal," Ms.
Sischy argued years ago. If that were true, then the whole
history of Christian art would be a practical failure. But she
is on to something.
