Actually, there are longer versions of that message going around which state the same value, interestingly enough, for both the 10 cent Michigan deposit, and the 5 cent deposit in 8 other states.
But as another friend pointed out, "It's humor. Don't think about it. Just laugh."

It's not quite that bad. Nortel's 52 week high was $71.25, so $1000 would have got you a shade over 14 shares, which at today's close of $5.02 would be worth a whopping $70. Assuming a price of $6 for a six-pack of Bud, or one dollar a can, $1000 would buy 1000 cans (obviously). It takes 31.9 cans to make a pound and you get about $0.60 for a pound of aluminum, so the 1000 cans would bring in only $ 18.80.
All things considered, I'd still buy the Bud.
