Yay! After a bone-headed mistake by me, we're back, and should be much faster.

Actually, I understand the DOS boot thing. I've always stuck another drive in to boot off of and just put the important stuff on RAID.

I was so frustrated getting LILO to try to understand that RAID controller that the options were either to do the DOS boot thing, or put another boot system in. Since the old server booted off of a floppy[Wiki], and I cringed every time we rebooted it, DOS seemed the best way to go.

Anyway, now I've just got to solve this one final Sendmail issue and we're completely up and running. The Debian "testing" distribution is normally a great way to use packages to run the latest and greatest, but occasionally it bites me.

It's all my bad - Dan asked me to rename that puppy 'autoexec.bat' so it would always boot into Linux after going through DOS. Once I had the machine booting, I didn't want to mess with it after realizing it wanted to login to Xwindows using an Xserver compiled for a card not in the machine...

The DOS boot thing forever proves Dan's oddness to me...

I'd have done it sooner.. but I did not think you were serious about 'startup.bat' Egads.. a DOS prompt!
