Storm

2001-11-29 18:10:51+01 by Dan Lyke 2 comments

Big storm and power outage here last night. The lights went out coincident with a "bang", after a short time the beeping got annoying so I powered down the 'puters, we lit up some candles, and played Scrabble. Dave, a UPS is not optional! Especially if you're trusting mail to MSexchange.

My big ol' Clary probably has the option via the serial port, I've just never taken the time to hack it. I think my little APS[Wiki] has an alarm silence, but 'til I break down and buy an LCD display the big beast as the primary source in my computer room is extra peace of mind.

What I probably ought to do is find a way to shelter the generator in a runnable place (Pesky carbon monoxide...), so I can throw a switch, pull a cord, and have the whole computer room isolated in about 30 seconds.

If you have the UPS I think you have there should be 2 switches on the front panel. The one on the left will silence the alarm. My viao went 1:40 before using the reserve juice and my linux box stayed up the full 3 hours till power came back. Of course scrabble by candle light might have it's apealling aspects too..
