I had seen this on another 'blog that's on my daily reads, but forgotten about it 'til Columbine reminded me: The MIT Media Lab Erotic Computation Group is well worth a scan, especially if you're at all familiar with the general output of the Media Lab. From the New York Times article on the site:
"There's a fair amount of fluffy stuff at the lab without much
hard technology behind it," explained Dan Maynes-Aminzade, the
first-year Media Lab graduate student behind the hoax. "Sometimes
we hear masturbatory rhetoric about how we're changing the world.
This seemed to fit."

I can't stand the Media Lab either, as is mostly doctrine here in the MIT Hacker Corps, but I should point out that many of us (though of course I only speak for myself) consider Greenspun just as bad a wanker or worse.
However, I'm cutting Phil some slack right now for an indefinite time; it's gotta hurt to have your company sucked out from under you by your own venture capitalists.

Of course, some other people at MIT have long suspected that the Media Lab was full of wankers. Philip Greenspun pointed out that they were about the last department at MIT to put up a Web site.
We will not edit your comments. However, we may delete your
comments, or cause them to be hidden behind another link, if we feel
they detract from the conversation. Commercial plugs are fine,
if they are relevant to the conversation, and if you don't
try to pretend to be a consumer. Annoying endorsements will be deleted
if you're lucky, if you're not a whole bunch of people smarter and
more articulate than you will ridicule you, and we will leave
such ridicule in place.
