Ok, I haven't seen half the films mentioned in his list but I may have to use his recomendations as a contrarian indicator. His list places LOTR on equal footing with films like Final Fantasy in the honorable mention category, sheeeesh.

Oh my.
Dan: I can't agree about LOTR being better than the book. It was fun and entertaining, but I still felt that there were several points I would have done differently than Jackson. Things that would have kept closer to the original text and yet still been appropriate for the medium and time constraints.
todd: I found the story in FF to be much more compelling than I had expected going in. I was pleasently surprised - so much so, in fact, that we bought it on DVD. The defining factor for me (all I had hoped for) was whether or not I was able to forget (at times) that this was an animated feature. During several of large portions of the movie I was able to do just that. I was exremely impressed overall.
I don't know if it has any bearings on my perceptions, but I've never played (or even see somebody else play) the games.

Hmmm FF met my expectation exactly. exceptional eye candy with with an uncompelling story and characters that are difficult to identify with. I say this as a person that has comlpeted FF VII & VIII am playing IX and will probably purchase X for my oldfashioned PS2. LOTR is in my top 5 movies of all time, sure I can pick on parts of it but found it to be a gloriously entertaining and can't choose which slot of the top 5 it merits because I am still in it's afterglow.

didn't live up to my expectations, and I wouldn't sit through it again, but I'd conteplate a third viewing of LoTR, actively look forward to the next two, and think it was probably a better experience than the book.

Why? I think they've got a lot in common. They appeal to/come from the geek-fantasy corner, I've been waiting three years to see each of them, and they (mostly) lived up to my hopes. (Actually, FF more than LOTR - but who's splitting hairs ;-)

No matter what the criteria, putting Final Fantasy along side Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring for any reason other than "spent a lot on effects" is kinda weird.
