Lycoris, formerly Redmond Linux, is now offering their desktop Linux distrobution, Desktop/LX preloaded on HP desktops ($449.99) and Compaq laptops ($729.99).
Lycoris offices are about 5 blocks south of the main MS campus and the CEO has done extensive [contract] work both for the Evil Empire and the Linux community. Desktop/LX is a new distro (based on Caldera's OpenLinux) that aims to provide an easy to install and use Linux for desktop use.

A quick look through my syslog says my Compaq laptop has a 400MHz processor. I had to add on RAM, and it's still got 96, not 128 meg, and it's probably a bit thicker 'cause it's got both the floppy and the CD-ROM built in, but two years ago I bought that machine at Office Despot for around $800. $729 for those specs, especially without built in Ethernet or 802.11, seems a little high. For someone who isn't familiar with installing Linux it might be a good idea, but the hundred or two dollar premium to install the OS is a little steep for someone like me.

I guess that just shows how out of touch I am with the current market. I thought $729 was pretty good. The last time I shopped for and bought a laptop $1000 was rock-bottom.

Lycoris' Compaq laptops are really expensive. P2 300 for $729? I can purchase a new Compaq 1ghz at Office Depot for $100 more. I understand the principal, but that's just a little rich for my blood. I do like their take on Linux, really installs well and might be "the one".
